Recenzje / Reviews:

I freakin' loved straight edge hardcore in the late '80s largely because it was a continuance of the classic early '80s period, a revival in a way of the spirit and sound following the generally horrendous era of the mid '80s (when so many bands tried to "branch out" from punk and play shitty crossover metal or dreadful indie rock). I'm talking about bands like NO FOR AN ANSWER, YOUTH OF TODAY, STRAIGHT AHEAD and, well, you know - the good ones. Of course that period was brief and eventually a bunch of shitty, second-rate suburban bands or jock-ish militancy ruined it and straight edge hardcore got a deservedly unfavorable reputation. I mention all this because RIGHT IDEA is one of those exceptional contemporary bands that captures the characteristic sound and approach of those legendary groups and yet does not fall into imitative and inauthentic revival territory. But one thing I could never stomach, and it's found here as well, is the whole youth crew shouted chorus. Excluding that minor annoyance, the tracks on this CD, a collection of EPs and unreleased studio sessions from 2007 to the present, are fast and furious and just outright terrific. I'm totally digging it. And unlike many collections of this nature, there are hardly any repeated tracks, making this release all the more worthwile. Check this out.

Right Idea from Cleveland plays old school hardcore like Straight Ahead with a straight edge message. Some people might have heard the demo EP, the Our World EP or picked up the Right Way EP. Also they did a European tour this summer, so you might have catched them there.
This cd is a real treat for all the cd lovers since it combines all their previous output in nice digipack, plus you get a few bonus tracks that haven’t been released on vinyl. It is basically four studio sessions and a live track. Their own songs are pretty good, often with solid production and good lyrics. Funny thing is that in the last session they tried a bit different approach. At first I didn’t really dig it, but it kind of grew on me. I enjoyed the cover songs, even the cheesy Iron Cross cover. You can hear they had fun recording them. I think the Straight Ahead cover is my favourite.
If you have all the records, still the bonus track, nice packaging and the good price can justify the purchase of this cd.

Enfin bref. J’aime quand meme ce disque.

Sehr schon.

Refuse Records goes back and collects RIGHT IDEA's collective recorded material from back to 2007 which represents the band's first demo. I have to say the demo is pretty incredible for just being a demo. I also have to say that the demo recording sounds remarkably similar to the new ep. And there are three years between recordings, which makes me think that RIGHT IDEA have stayed pretty true to their sound. It also impresses the hell out of me because too often bands get worse with age. They can lose their energy and impact with improvements in musicianship and production values. RIGHT IDEA have kept that joie de vivre and they are a band worth listening to as a result. It also doesn't hurt that they have used the same studio throughout their various recordings. They found a studio that worked for them and they stuck with it. So having said that, the whole recording doesn't sound like it is part of the same session. In fact, the material off "Our World" sound a bit brighter and louder and cleaner then the demo and the new ep. And there are a few classic covers to be found with that session which include DYS' "Glue" and AF's "Crucified by Your Sins". But generally RIGHT IDEA rock a youth crew sound that is awesome and yet indistinguishable from their predecessors. It depends on how you like your straight edge, but this material is damn good if you ask me.

This discography CD brings the youth crew straightedge and brings it hard(core). The demo tracks which start off the disc could easily be mistaken for some lost Youth Of Today practice tapes if one didn’t know better. Once the recording quality picks up on the other sessions contained herein, Right Idea does distinguish itself a bit, though never straying far from the hardcore path their forefathers laid before them (the straight and narrow street). While taking in the whole twenty-something tracks at once can be a bit much, a nice bit of well-executed growly hardcore is always welcome. Favorite lyric: “Everyone’s turned their back on the edge! Everyone’s turned their back on the edge!” Only thing missing is subsequent stabbing of those backs (preferably in the streets) to make it the perfect HC lyric.
